 Screencastify and Loom

This is a very useful screen capture tool for teachers to record their screen and add sound at the same time. UpdateThe free version is no longer capped at 5 minutes at one go. You can record and edit up to 30 minutes for free:  https://www.screencastify.com/pricing. For comparison, Loom limits editing to 5 minute videos.

You need to use it with the Chrome browser and it requires no further installation. Once it is there you can use it from any computer as long as you sync your Chrome browser settings. It saves the video to your Google Drive and provides a link to share the video automatically. I often use it when I have a technical question from students. It is better to show them how to do something than write instructions.

Here is a tutorial showing you how to start. It uses the educator's edition which saves to a school drive, not her personal Google Drive.

Loom

Click on the image to watch a video on how to use Loom or copy this link: https://www.loom.com/share/e00c8856f48049519ca6bece165b449a

One thing you might want to consider is if you are willing to allow Loom all the permissions they seek, including accessing all your contacts. That means all of you Google contacts if you use the Chrome extension.

For educators:

Other possibilities are:

This used to be called Screencast-o-matic. It has got competitive pricing and also features that make it competitive with Loom. Screencastify doesn't have auto-generated captions which both Loom and ScreenPal offer.

Camtasia - this is the commercial option I have used quite often. You can get a free 14 day trial.

If you are looking for free video editors you can try these useful tools:

KDENLIVE : I used this to edit the first video about Blogger.

Enjoy!
